CEO Message March 2024

From our International Women’s Day to entering the holy month of Ramadan, and to our first Queensland Executive Multicultural Service Sector Network (The Network) meeting for 2024, there has been a lot of exciting and thought-provoking moments in March.

International Women’s Day

March started with International Women’s Day. In celebration, our Women’s Ethnic Network (WEN) hosted a breakfast attended by close to 300 women from countries around the world. The atmosphere was inspiring and uplifting as we paid tribute to the invaluable contributions of women in Queensland.

This breakfast would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors. I thank all of you for your generosity. It enabled women to make connections which will further empower us to strive towards equity. This year’s theme – Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress captured our goal and hope which is also demonstrated by the ECCQ Advancing Women scholarships. Congratulations to our 2024 scholarship recipients, we look forward to continuing to celebrate these wins.

If you missed this year’s breakfast, I encourage you to checkout out our social platforms where you can see all the highlights.

The Network meeting

Despite progress in recent decades, systemic racism still persists in a broad range of areas. Too often, we end up with a perverse debate where sometimes calling out racism is regarded as a bigger moral crime than the perpetration of racism itself.

This month the Network was joined by Cameron Harsley Deputy Commissioner, QLD Police, Hon. Charis Mullen Minister for Child Safety, Minister for Seniors and Disability Services and Minister for Multicultural Affairs, and Hon. Corrine McMillan Assistant Minister for Education and Youth Justice. The discussion focused on the increasing incidents of racism in our schools, the question was posed – how do we equip the education system to ensure it is doing its best?

I am grateful to our keynote presenters Dr John Bosco Ngendakurio and Dr Dinesh Palipana OAM MD for providing deep insights into this issue.

We are always looking to amplify community’s voice on concerns that impact their daily lives, visit our publications page to share your thoughts and feedback into our live policy papers.

FECCA Conference update

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated in the FECCA artwork competition, including all who supported promoting and increasing visibility. We are very close to announcing the winner, your contributions have been invaluable.
