RentConnect – new Toowoomba initiative
RentConnect aims to link people with low needs in to the private rental market by skilling them and ensuring they are ready, able and willing to rent in this market. Multicultural Mental Health Australia launches new, user-friendly website
MMHA has launched www.mmha.org.au to help reduce stigma around mental illness in Australia’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities. The new website will make it easier for people living with a mental illness and their carers to access fact sheets about suicide prevention and mental health in 21 languages. The website also contains information about relevant government policies, as well as opportunities to lobby and raise awareness through consumer and carer groups.

New resource for sector development workers
The Queensland Alliance (peak body for the mental health community service sector) has produced a new sector development handbook. It is a practical approach to helping Community Workers improve their skills and understanding of their role in sector development. It provides guidelines on establishing an ethical framework for practice and the information, tools and resources required for a sector development worker. It supports informed decision making processes enabling a sector development worker to select an appropriate methodology for their area that will deliver clearly identifiable benefits for participating organisations and consumers whilst at the same time delivering on the outcomes required by the funding body. Working with LGBT young people
Open Doors Youth Service is leading a project funded by the Department of Communities to build the capacity of the youth sector to work with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) young people. It will be conducting focus groups and interviews across the state as part of this project, to identify how the sector is currently responding to the needs of LGBT young people. New LGBTI Legal Service open in Brisbane
Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans Intersex Legal Service opened at 30 Helen St, Teneriffe, 4006. The Service will operate evening advice sessions every week on Wednesday from 6pm Clients arriving after 7:30pm will not be accepted. New Pregnancy Birth and Baby Helpline
A new, expanded, national 24 hour Pregnancy, Birth and Baby Helpline is commencing on 1 July. The $17 million Helpline (1800 88 24 36) will provide information and advice about pregnancy, birth and the first 12 months of a baby’s life to women, their partners and families. The Helpline will also be a resource for women who have experienced the loss of a child during pregnancy, or during or after birth. Work-life balance information kits
As part of the Queensland Government's Work-Life Balance Strategy, a number of information kits have been developed to assist Manager's with the successful implementation of work-life balance policies in organisations. Medical Cooling and Heating Electricity Concession Scheme to start from 1 July
The Queensland Government has established a new concession scheme for low income Queenslanders who have a medical condition requiring them to use more electricity for cooling and heating.  This announcement follows a campaign led by the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Queensland. The Insurance Law Service
Consumer Credit Legal Centre has launched the new Insurance Law Service website, a national service providing free information, legal advice & referral on insurance matters. The new website includes fact sheets, sample letters and multi-lingual publications. The Insurance Law Service provides free telephone legal advice to anyone in Australia on insurance law matters or disputes involving insurers.  It does not provide advice to insurers or businesses. EzyGreen program to help Brisbane residents save energy
The Brisbane City Council and Queensland Government have announced a new program to assist Brisbane residents to reduce their energy consumption, as part of the Council’s goal to make Brisbane Australia’s most sustainable city.  The EzyGreen program will offer a range of energy saving options to Brisbane residents, including:*A free Crest EarthSmart power board, *A free Climate Smart Home Service, *Discounted electrical appliances, solar hot water or solar power systems through corporate sponsors, *Competitive finance solutions for a solar power system through NAB.  From mid-July, the scheme will be open to renters and home owners in Brisbane, who can register online.

Queensland West Indies and Caribbean Community Association
The QWICCA association aims to bring together anyone interested in Caribbean culture. The Jahbutu Band and the Rivercity Community Steel Band have linked together to spread the culture and music of the Caribbean to the Queensland community. How to Obtain an Interpreter
The Department of Communities has set up a factsheet to help departments and agencies obtain an interpreter. The factsheet is available for download here. Professional interpreters are available in Queensland through the Commonwealth Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 13 14 50. Madonna King’s morning program on Radio National has started a series of short interviews with Brisbane residents who have come from another country. (see above) Interviews have already been held with over 50 individuals and Madonna’s producer has now asked if ECCQ can help. The interviews apparently are short and played one every day during Madonna’s program. New Information Sheet: Resources for Responding to Racism in Schools
We all know that racism in schools is unacceptable, but school staff - including teachers and welfare coordinators - may not always have the resources available to know how to respond to it. After consultation with a range of teachers, school welfare coordinators, youth workers and agencies, CMY has developed an information sheet containing a list of useful resources, programs and organisations for responding to racism in schools. Refugees' Australian Stories now live
The Researchers for Asylum Seekers have launched their multimedia project, Refugees’ Australian Stories: Building Bridges Across Communities. Using images and the spoken and written word, Refugees’ Australian Stories tells the compelling stories of refugees from around the world who have made Australia their home. It aims to give a human face to public discussions of asylum seekers and refugees and hopes to show that they have been great co-workers, neighbours and friends to other Australians for many years and fears associated with them not "fitting in" are unfounded.  To see these stories, visit www.ras.unimelb.edu.au/Refugees_Australian_Stories/index.html

What would you do? – Australians and asylum seekers

The Red Cross marked the start of Refugee Week with the release of a survey on attitudes to refugees and the ideas associated with them. In sharp contrast to the mainstream media coverage of the issue, it appears that the vast majority of Australians sympathise with the plight of refugees and would take similar actions if they or their families were in a similar situation. Homeless Information Portal
The Homeless Information Portal is a website designed to help workers access up to date information on support services available to people experiencing homelessness, particularly related to alcohol and other drug use issues. This website includes information on working with people who are intoxicated right through to information specific to young people experiencing homelessness.

Homeless Persons Legal Clinic
The Queensland Public Interest Law Clearing House (QPILCH) has received new funding for free legal services for homeless people in Queensland. The legal services are at this stage available in Brisbane, Toowoomba and Townsville. Around 250 lawyers from 21 law firms have volunteered their time for this worthwhile project. More here.


Recognising what volunteers from diverse cultural backgrounds contribute
People from CALD backgrounds make an important contribution to volunteering in Australia.  Research in this area is growing, providing new insight into volunteering and CALD communities, and evidence that many thousands of Australians from diverse cultural backgrounds volunteer both within and outside their ethnic communities. Police Powers: Your Rights
It’s often difficult for CALD people to understand the legal process and their rights in the justice system.  Caxton Legal Centre have released an updated, easy to read handbook called “Police Powers: Your Rights” which explains in plain English, what to expect when clients are dealing with police.   The booklet is concise and covers a number of topics relevant to young people, including the rights that individuals have when dealing with police in situations including arrest, being approached on the street, police interviews and searches. Community Services Information System: (COMSIS)
The Department of Communities have announced the public release of the Community Services Information System (COMSIS). The system provides access to information about local communities including demographics, education, employment, housing, income and disadvantage. There are tutorials available on the website to assist in using the site, which provides up to date information about the various needs of a particular community. This is a great resource for services wanting to plan for the future, as it identifies areas of high need by using Disadvantage-Need-Risk (DNR) rankings. Family Planning Queensland Video Series
The video series, “What young people know, like and need: Sexual health, blood borne viruses and youth friendly services”, shows young people talking about what they think is important about sexual health, blood borne viruses and youth friendly services. Get all the details here

Looking @2.0 is a free, online course presented by the State Library of Queensland, supported by OPAL funding. Refugees’ Australian stories
Refugees have been coming to Australia since early 19th century. They are our neighbours, co-workers and friends. NGO's statement on asylum and regional processing
Australia cannot act alone on asylum boats. Twenty-one major Australian refugee support organisations and aid agencies have today joined forces to call on the Australian Government and Opposition to focus on international cooperation on refugee protection, warning that there is no quick fix to the complex causes of asylum seeker movements. New worker resource: preventing alcohol problems among youth

Family Planning Queensland (FPQ) recently collaborated with young people from the University of Southern Queensland to produce a series of short videos for people who work with young people. Youth HIV/AIDS training
FPQ is funded by Queensland Health to support the youth sector workforce to educate and inform young people about sexual health and blood borne viruses. To achieve this aim, the HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C and sexual health promotion with young people project can offer face-to-face training to organisations working with young people. New name for multicultural youth organisation

The National Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network has had a minor name change to become the Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network (Australia) or MYAN. The new name allows each member of the network to highlight issues specific to their state or territory, while contributing to a united voice on concerns of national significance. SBS Tv's INSIGHT program wants to talk about the burqa
Some people have recently called for Australia to follow the lead of several European countries and consider banning certain forms of Islamic dress.  INSIGHT wants to bring together Australia's Muslim community and non-Muslims to hear your thoughts on the issue. They want to speak to women who wear the burqa, learn why they wear it and hear how the non-Muslim community responds to them.  And women who are Muslim but choose not to wear it. And reasons why. Gatton closes language classes to refugees and migrants

Migrant families who have moved to Gatton from countries such as Sudan, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and many other countries come to 12 William Street in Gatton to learn different levels of language skills three times a week. Classes have been held in Gatton by the Southern Qld Institute of TAFE (SQIT) for more than ten years.  SQIT has now indicated these classes will cease from the middle of September. Read more here.

New chapter on pregnancy, birth and post-natal care

A new chapter has been added to the Multicultural Clinical Support Resource folder which examines pregnancy, birth and post-natal care in multicultural communities. The Cultural Dimensions of Pregnancy, Birth and Post-Natal Care chapter features 11 Cultural profiles:
Burmese, Chinese, Fijian, Filipino, Japanese, Indian, Malaysian, Papua New Guinean, Samoan, Sudanese, Vietnamese.  Also sections about maternity services overseas, concomittant conditions and cultural groups, cultural issues in group education, psychological and social issues relating to pregnancy and early childhood, and information about female genital mutilation. COPMI (Children Of Parents with a Mental Illness) booklet.
The free booklet “Piecing the Puzzle Together - Raising young children when mental illness is a part of your life” in six translated versions which can be downloaded. The Centrelink Multilingual Call Centre has increased the number of available languages, where by customers are able to speak to a Customer Service Adviser in their own language. By calling 131202 they can conduct their Centrelink business personally. Multicultural communities can now access translated public transport information from TransLink’s main website. TransLink CEO Peter Strachan said comprehensive travel information was now available at the bottom of each web page of the TransLink site in Arabic, Chinese [simplified Chinese], French, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Serbian, Spanish and Vietnamese . New Problem Gambling Resources Available
Free brochures, posters and DVDs aimed at helping non-English speaking problem gamblers have been launched in NSW. The resources are part of major awareness campaigns targeting the Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, Greek and Italian-speaking communities. The campaigns aim to create community-based dialogues about the issues of problem gambling and increase active help-seeking among both problem gamblers and their loved ones. The Childbirth Education Group is for women 19 years and under who are pregnant with their first baby. The group starts 10:30am to 1:00pm at YPP House: 119 Stafford Rd, Kedron. It's a 12 week program with lots of fun and useful info about birth, babies and being a mum. You can join any time, and we run the program 3 times a year.  Young women are welcome to bring a partner, friend or support person with them if they want to. Morning tea and lunch are provided, YPP can help with transport, and it's FREE.  YPP also has Young Mums' Groups for mums who were pregnant as teenagers, and are still under 23 years. The Multicultural Development Association (MDA) and TAFE English Language and Literacy Services- Southbank (TELLS) Partnership Program is currently holding community English classes for mothers and toddlers. ASIST suicide first aid - various dates  locations
Focus: suicide first aid Timeframe : 2 days. In ASIST, people learn to apply a suicide intervention  model. It helps caregivers recognise when someone  may be at risk of suicide. Skills to Pay the Bills -  11 October
MultiLink Child, Youth and Family Services will be running a Get Set for Work Program beginning on March 1. The program is aptly named Skills to Pay the Bills and is a 4 day a week, 10 week employment and job preparation program.  This program will feature: accredited training * job preparation * industry visits * team building/life skills activities.  The eligibility criteria are: Aged 17-19yrs old * Culturally diverse * Unemployed or underemployed (25hrs or less) * Not enrolled in education or training. Townsville HIV Social Group - 13 November
Townsville Sexual Health, Positive Directions and QPP will continue to host social afternoons for people living with HIV and their families in Townsville.  A new location at Clint Bradley’s Deli in Domain Central on Duckworth St, Garbutt.  Dates set are Saturday  November 13 and bus 204 gets you there if you’re not driving.   1800 636 241 for more information

Sunshine Coast "Positive" Social Support - 27 November
