Community Media Link

The Community Media Link Queensland project, funded by MAQ and undertaken in partnership by ECCQ and Griffith University, is designed to promote good media practice in reporting on multicultural issues.

The Objectives are:
  1. To enable community groups and leaders to understand and effectively respond to media coverage of multicultural issues through media training
  2. To further media practitioners’ knowledge and understanding of ways to report responsibly on multicultural issues and CALD communities
  3. To develop a repository of good practice case studies and strategies to benefit communities, leaders and media practitioners.

A key objective is to develop an accessible web-based database of links for information on CALD communities in Queensland
These links provide information on each community, (such as language, history, cultural issues religions and faith, migration and settlement information and data) and provide links with contact information for local community leaders, spokespersons, representatives and associations. This information is hosted on the ECCQ website on the Profile Links pages.

Stories of settlement and migration from individuals and families, are found on the Settlement Stories pages.

For data on the settlement patterns in Queensland of migrant and ethnic communities see the ‘Where We Live’ page.

From time to time the program offers ECCQ/Griffith Uni "Media Training sessions". The Media Training sessions cover:

  •  Identifying areas of concern through community reporting of the impact of negative media portrayal
  •  Responding to an incident through gathering generic trends, reports, cultural profiles, media releases
  •  Developing capacity in CALD communities for effective media strategies in particular situations.
  •  Developing workshops for community leaders and organisations to enhance their media communication skills to deal effectively with the media
