Community sector monthly tip – May 

This month’s tip for community associations from the Community Sector Development Program is about the importance of setting up policies and procedures. 

Board Members are responsible for directing and shaping the organisation and, as such, they are responsible for the development and implementation of a set of policies and procedures.

Policies are high level rules providing guidance and standards (mainly principals) while procedures are instructions to implement these standards (the ‘how to’). These documents will set the tone for the strategic and operational work of the organisation.

Organisations typically have policies and procedures in relation to four main areas:

  • Governance
  • Human Resources
  • Financial and organisational management
  • Service Delivery
